I just purchased a set of fonts from font designer Tom Chalky and I think I'm in love... (in the fonts... not in Tom. Sorry Tom ). Like any designer I'm inclined to geek out about things like fonts though not so much that I would blog about it but this time is different.

Mr Chalky exposed me to a new type of font type called "SVG" which allows for exponentially more detail. Though he didn't develop the font type he certainly has mastered font creation using it. For example, If you were to see the type referenced (above) you surely would assume that it was hand-painted text but not this... It's a font!!!

I didn't make this ad (wish I did). I love it. The reason why is not just because it's mildly clever but for so much more.

Orville Redenbacher is competing in the 100 calorie snack space and released the preceding sales pitch. The ad works because it communicates a simple message that their 100 calorie snack portion is more than the others... but the ad does more than that. They could have just as easily put two competing 100 snack portions side by side and simple say something akin to: "we give you more" . But by turning their snack into a pacman, it also reinforces chomping (snacking?) while at the same time drawing the ad viewer to the final message on the advertiser's terms.

You might not have noticed it when initially viewing the ad, but you were very cleverly drawn to the large packman shape and by way of the positioning of elements... they caused you to follow the path or crackers to the base ad message and then ultimately to Orville's photo, logo and nutrition information.

They drew you in, sold you a compelling differentiator for their product and then left you with their classic branding. THIS is a great example of good advertising. Good Job Orville. Good. Job.

I'm a huge fan of banksy as I was first turned on to guerrilla art by his unique form of graffiti. Though his art sometimes has political undertones, it's not the summary of his work. I'm a big political junkie and I recall after first being turned on to banksy's work how effective that his street-centric style of art could potentially be extremely influential if he incorporated a more overt political angle to it.

Banksy never went that route but I began looking for artists of this type. Only a few did anything I found very interesting until I found Sabo. His work differed from banksy's style but in my opinion it was (and still is) just as good... perhaps better. For example, here's an unsolicited poster he did for Ted Cruz, a very buttoned up constitutional conservative who is quite interesting if however mild and semi robotic. As I have come to learn, Sabo was a fan of Cruz but felt he needed more street cred. He felt that he could be the one to lend him such an asset.

Sabo created the preceding poster to prop up Cruz and give him the aforementioned much-needed "street" appeal. His approach was so compelling that Cruz ultimately learned of his work and asked if he could sell the posters on his political 20016 presidential campaign web site during the republican primary.

I wanted so badly to buy one but apparently they were in limited supply and I missed out. I have subsequently become a huge fan of Sabo's work and follow him closely. He's ABSOLUTELY an artist to check out. You can see more of Sabo's work at http://unsavoryagents.com

I found a youtube video detailing how to make a linocut look in adobe illustrator.

I get so inspired when I see these quick adobe videos . I decided to try the technique on a self portrait of me. The technique is mostly applied to my hair. Regardless, I'm pretty happy with the outcome considering it took only about 30 minutes.
